As a child, I was taught that an older person is wiser and always right; they have been on the earth longer and have had more experiences than  you, ergo, they deserve your respect. My people have a term for older siblings/people: “Egbon”. It means ‘one who is wiser’. But maybe after this little story, you’ll see why I disagree with that theory occasionally.

My older  sister and I were alone at home one day and she wanted to fuel the generator, so she picked up the keg containing the fuel and poured into the fuel tank. There is a fuel meter on the generator, so you know when it’s filled, but my sister wasn’t convinced by the meter; she kept adding more until there was none left in the keg and it was spilling out of the generator’s fuel tank. She put the lid on the fuel tank, but it was still spilling. So she tried to suck the fuel out of the generator with a hose but she couldn’t; she got petrol in her mouth twice, not to mention the dirt on the hose. She didn’t stop there. When the hose thing didn’t work, she took the hose out of the fuel tank and went to get a straw. Yes, a straw…
