Lagos State House of Assembly has directed the State Water Corporation to find a lasting solution to the acute shortage of water in the State.
To this end, the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa gave directive to the House Committee on Environment and Finance to meet with the General Manager of the Corporation and other relevant agencies to alleviate the sufferings of the people.
The two Committees were empowered to verify from the Managing Director, Engr. Muminu Adekunle Badmus what was responsible for the delay, stating that there was need to also enquire if there was problem in disbursing funds to the Corporation.
A Lawmaker representing Surulere Constituency I, Desmond Elliot, said Under Matters of Urgent Importance that the issue if not addressed promptly might lead to epidemic.
Lawmakers lamented the untold hardship experienced by Lagosians due to water shortage.
The House directed the Committees to invite the General Manager to brief them on why the Corporation stopped water production.
Obasa said they should work collectively on the issue in order to find a lasting solution to the problem.
Meanwhile, the House also directed relevant agencies to guard against flooding as rainy season becomes intense in the state.
The House directed the Clerk of the House, Ganiyu Abiru to write a letter to the affected ministries to take action.
This followed a motion moved by the Chairman House Committee on Health Services, Segun Olulade over flood that sacked Poka and Imokin villages in Eredo, Epe.
The House said the Ministry of Environment needed to redouble efforts at ensuring functional and free flow of water across the State as well as carrying out palliative measures in villages already affected by flood.
The lawmakers also urged the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development to ensure that all building constructions comply with the approved design.
It also advised the Ministry of Information and Strategy to continue sensitizing the public on the danger of blocking the drains with indiscriminate disposal of refuse.
Explaining the motion, Olulade, who said that residents should desist from habit of throwing refuse into canal, noted that two communities at Epe Local Government had been sacked by flood.
