Akin was the tallest in class, lanky and delicate describes him better. His skin was fair and clear without blemish.
His teeth was white like he consistently bleached with hypo. His fingers were expectedly slim and slender, very tender to touch. She had eyes for only him, his smile was radiant enough to illuminate her world for the whole day. She would follow him to the end of the world, hold his hands till the world caves in…except they were both in Nursery Class II.
Crushes are not necessarily teenagers stuff, little children, teenagers, grown adults and maybe grandparents. No matter your age or status, you are definitely going to get a crush every now and then, something about the other sex gets into your head and makes him popular in your heart. A crush is nothing but an appreciation of beauty or certain traits that you admire in someone else, especially the opposite sex. One really can’t say what she saw in Akin, maybe his height or delicate eyes, because Akin was the only guy she remembers from Nursery Class II. She changed school and was Akin forgotten? Well, she remembers him, if that is what it meant to be not forgotten.
One other guy almost caught her eye in primary classes, but not as strong as Akin did. As a teenager, her crushes were few, but there were 2 major ones. Crush 1 at 16 was Big A, Big A was big in size and older in age, and he spoke good English- that was the catch. A year after leaving the hostel, she hasn’t adjusted to living at home without the boarding girls chatter well articulated in English language. When Big A struck a conversation with her in the market place, she wasn’t just shocked that he could come shop groceries for his mom at the local market, but also that he did it with such good attitude and was proud about it. Aaaw, Big A is so well cultured and has got big drowning eyes.
Big A happens to live in her estate too, such beautiful coincidences. they would soon become an item. Big A shares in the crush fantasy. It sure wasn’t unrequited. She told her brother, he volunteered to be her chaperone to any trip with or to Big A. Big A didn’t seem to mind, she liked the plans too. Every other evenings were spent at Big A’s place, they would laugh and giggle under the moon till her brother says it’s time to go home. Then, she got admission into University, she moved away.
The passion fizzled out! Was it meant to be like that? does passion fade out? She thought she was in love, is it not meant to grow and the heart getting fonder of each other? Most people assume that they’re in love with their crush. But it’s not love. Really, it’s not. Thank goodness there were no phones, Big A must have gotten the unwritten memo- the crush is over. When you have a crush on someone, big chances are, you’re just madly attracted to them and nothing more. I guess she got attracted to something or someone else.
Then came crush 2; that is the epic gangster crush! This lasted for 2 years. She was madly attracted; his fingernails were broad and cutely shaped, his handwriting could beat many calligraphic fonts, he generously would spread his smiles and his softness would melt a heart of stone, plus they were course-mates in Uni. They were friends, attracted to each other, bore the rigours of academics together, looked forward to each new lecture day not because of knowledge but for the mushiness they share. Every time they saw, they liked each other more.
Crushes are a rollercoaster, puts you on high and low. It can bring happiness but can also bring nervousness when it’s on for a long time. A crush can mature into a date, it could grow into a beautiful relationship. It may be what it is, a temporary feeling of attraction. Say a word about your feeling to someone or the crush, it may fizzle out, it may grow. But when you sign the dotted lines, you need to let your crush remain what it is, temporary and passing. But will you find anyone attractive while married or serious with another person? Yes, I can bet on it!
