A 2 storey hostel building still under construction at Umuoma Nekede, Owerri in Imo state has reportedly collapsed. Speaking on the unfortunate incident, Imo State Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere said, “It was shocking as I and the Chief of Staff, Uche Nwosu, the APC State Chairman, Chief Hilary Eke, some staff of OCDA and community leaders in the area, inspected a collapsed 2-storey hostel building at Umuoma, Nekede Owerri-west LGA under construction. A visit to the scene revealed the hasty use of substandard materials. I imagined the calamity that would have befallen us if the hostel was completed and students moved in.
Government has directed the sealing of the site, and the prosecution of the site Engineer and property owner who are still at large.
The Governor urged the people to ensure that they get building approvals from Development Authorities before the commencement of any building as government will take possession and prosecute owners of any building without approval. A committee shall be set up to unravel the circumstances surrounding the collapse of the building.
