Flashback: Murtala Muhammed

35 years ago, on February 13, 1976, Nigeria’s then head of state General Murtala Muhammed was assassinated on his way to work at the Dodan Barracks, Lagos during an abortive coup led by Lt-Colonel B.S. Dimka.

During Muhammed’s short rule his policies won him broad popular support, and in some circles he was considered a folk hero. His potrait adorns the twenty naira note and Murtala Muhammed Airport is named in his honour.
