Advice Papa Gave Me: Learn From Mistakes

My dear daughter,

As we all journey through life, we are bound to misstep from time to time. We are not superhuman; we are all fallible, and are bound to make some mistakes. However, it is not the mistakes that we make that should matter but the lessons we learn from those mistakes.

It is very important that we take to heart the lessons we learn from mistakes we make, so that we do not make the same mistakes again. Our mistakes should make us to reflect on the steps to take to correct or remedy them, and move on with our life.

Success is not easy to attain. We have to face many difficulties and failures as we pursue our goals in life; however, rather than giving up because of our failures we should see them as stepping-stones for our success. Anyone who does not learn anything from his or her past mistakes is unlikely to succeed life.

Thomas Edison tried two thousand different materials in search of a filament for the light bulb. When none worked satisfactorily, his assistant complained, “All our work is in vain. We have learned nothing.” Edison replied very confidently, “Oh, we have come a long way and we have learned a lot. We know that there are two thousand elements which we cannot use to make a good light bulb.”

Edison is correct. We should always try to learn from our mistakes, and our mistakes should never dishearten us.
